Bigay Pugay sa mga Bayani
The "Araw ng Kagitingan," also known as the "Day of
Valor," is a Philippine national holiday. It honors the bravery of
Filipinos and American soldiers during the Japanese
occupation of the Philippines during World War II. During the
Japanese occupation, Major General Edward P. King of the
United States Army was forced to surrender about 76
thousand Filipino and American soldiers. They were ordered
to travel 145 kilometers to Camp O'Donnell in San Fernando.
There was no rest break, no food or drink was provided, and
almost 500 soldiers died during the journey.
The Day of Valor is celebrated on the 9th of April each
year, although in 2009, it was moved to the 6th of April to
prevent confrontation with Maundy Thursday. It is here that
we show respect to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives
defending Bataan against the Japanese. In the 19th century,
Japan was one of the most powerful countries. As far as I am
interested, it was the saddest incident that happened in the
Philippines since over a thousand souls died during World
War II, without the troops who defended Bataan, the name
Philippines and the flag do not exist today.
The Day of Valor is one of the most important
Filipino holidays; we must not forget this holiday in honoring
the men who died during World War II; let us pay our
respects and pray for the heroic soldiers who fought against
the Japanese.
